Resistance and Alternatives to Oil Drilling in the Amazon
The
New York Times article
“Ecuador Indians Fend Off Oil Companies With Tourism” (January 19, 2004) reports on the Achuar people in Ecuador’s Amazon basin, who are resisting oil companies’ efforts to drill here. The idea, indigenous leaders say, is to demonstrate options to oil exploration.
The now classic documentary
TRINKETS AND BEADS is an earlier story of attempts by the MAXUS corporation to convince the Huaorani people of Ecuador to allow drilling on their land. As it covers the resistance to MAXUS, the film also provides the long history of oil related exploitation of the Huaorani.
