Paternity Suit in Egypt Raises Issues of Sex, Virginity, Feminism, and Islam
As reported on January 25, 2005 in the
New York Times, a 27-year-old costume designer, Hind el-Hinnawy, did something unthinkable in Egypt:
she had an illegitimate child and filed a paternity suit against Ahmed el-Fishawy (a famous 24-year-old actor), igniting a national debate over sex, virginity and women's rights in this conservative, religious society.
Our documentary
THE VIRGIN DIARIES covers many of these same issues. It is the story of a young Moroccan woman who, with her an American friend researching Moroccan family law reforms, embarks on a journey through Morocco in search of answers to her questions about virginity, sex and Islam.
